Have a X-File Style Halloween!
From The Traveling Ph.D. & The Coach

High School.

2011
10.28

Today, I will remember why I didn’t become a high school teacher. That’s right – I’ll be making my tri-annual trip down to The Coach’s school to scare the crap out of his AP students with an bona fide college level lecture. In return, I will receive a free school lunch of either a taco, grilled chicken, fish, or a fajita. I’m a little disappointed; after all, my high school always had those rectangular cardboard pizza slices on Fridays. Now, I need to go find an outfit that fits their teacher dress code but is still warm enough to wear to tonight’s football game.

And no, I am not taking out my nose ring to meet the dress code.

Realization

As I sit here in the wee hours of the morning working another document due sometime this semester, I have come to the realization that I have turned into a mid-level bureaucrat.

That is all.

Pie Bird!!!
From the kitchen of The Traveling Ph.D.

Contrary to popular belief, The Traveling Ph.D. does not work *all* the time. This week, for example, The Coach brought home a bag of locally grown apples, so I broke out my pie bird and constructed the easiest apple pie known to mankind. Seriously, it’s just chop, sprinkle and dot. Well, and grate because I did add some nutmeg to the mix. The worst part was making the pie dough.

Two days later, and there’s only once piece left.

Sabbatical. The First Trip.

2011
10.18

According to Wikipedia – yes, I know, don’t tell my students — the term sabbatical is rooted in the Latin word sabbaticus, the Greek word sabbatikos, the Arabic word Sobat, and the Hebrew word shabbat. The last word, shabbat, literally means  ”a ceasing.”  The entry goes on to say: “it is a rest from work, or a hiatus, often lasting from two months to a year.”

These days — at least at my University where the concept of recharging your batteries during sabbatical has been removed from the Faculty Handbook — sabbaticals are more about getting your research done because there’s never any time to get it done during the teaching year. That won’t keep me from traveling, though. The trick is just to combine your research with your fun. Keeping that in mind, I just firmed up my plans to present at the SPSA this January. Originally, I was going to go to a conference in Vancouver, but my University travel budget isn’t big enough to cover the whole trip.

So, New Orleans is a go for January. I’ve already booked my rooms at the Ambassador (one block from the conference hotel, but $100/night cheaper) and have asked the Travel Office to buy my train ticket ($162/round trip using my AAA discount).

Now, I just have to finish my conference paper.
